A Historiography of the Brooklyn House of Detention for Men, 1956–2019

Assembled from archival research and annotated by members of Art Against Displacement, this zine draws direct parallels between the city’s construction of the Brooklyn House of Detention in the mid-20th century and its current plan to build a “modern, more humane” jail on the same site. Studying the rise and fall of the Brooklyn House of Detention reveals that the city’s promises of carceral reform have never come to fruition, permitting state violence to continue unchecked — and begging the question, “What could there be instead of a new jail?”.

First released at Brooklyn Jail Support, on the sidewalk outside Kings County Criminal Court, in August 2025.
