Archives des Luttes des Femmes en Algérie

This trilingual publication (French / English / Arabic) from the collective Archives des luttes des femmes en Algérie (Saadia Gacem, Awel Haouati and Lydia Saïdi) was produced for the fifteenth edition of documenta in 2022. Launched in March 2019 during the hirak, the project builds an open-access digital archive of Algerian feminist organizations, collectives, and associations in Algeria and its diaspora across recent decades. The booklet reproduces a chronological selection of declarations, journals, bulletins, agendas, posters, tracts and photographs documenting the mobilization of women during the democratic period from 1989 into the early 1990s, with an extended section on the women’s rights demonstrations held in Algiers on March 8th, 1990. A text by sociologist Feriel Lalami traces the main stages of the Algerian feminist movement from 1989 to 1991; Awel Haouati’s essay reconstructs the demonstrations of March 8th, 1990 from materials recovered from an artistic gala and the demonstration held also in Algiers on that day.
