From Mines to Markets: Becoming Commodities

In this conversation, with Aleksandra Wojewska we explore the economic importance component of the criticality equation, which reflects the continuum between markets and minerals. By retracing the roles of various actors involved in price-setting within the commodity market and examining their modes of operation, our discussion reveals how criticality enables speculation—generating lucrative price risk management schemes while simultaneously driving extraction. The conversation also sheds light on the current infrastructure of commodity trading, focusing on its gatekeepers, who shape the material conditions of trade, labour, and environmental extraction. Through the lens of price-setting, the entangled relationships between finance and resource management are rendered visible and open to critique.
